Jonesboro, Arkansas
Jonesboro is located in the Northeast corner of Arkansas, is recognized as a regional cultural, agricultural, industrial, retail, and medical hub. It sits on Crowley’s Ridge, which is a unique geographical feature comprising a narrow, rolling hill region that rises 250 – 550 feet above the flat Mississippi Delta Alluvial Plain in Craighead County. Jonesboro is one of the two County Seats in Craighead County. It is 130 miles Northeast of Little Rock and 70 miles Northwest of Memphis, Tennessee. It boasts a population of approximately 80,650 residing in Jonesboro, making it the fifth-largest city in the state. In 2023, the median age of the community was 33.7 years, and the median household income was $52,559, which increased by 2.81% from the prior year. The racial breakout for the community includes 65.97% White, 22.82% Black or African American, with Hispanic and other races making up the remainder of the population. The median property value in 2023 was $213,400 and had a 3.9% unemployment rate in January of 2025.
Jonesboro is in Craighead County a hub of economic activity that serves a 12-county region. Jonesboro is known for five target industries: manufacturing, healthcare, professional services, logistics, and agriculture. The Craighead Technology Parks are already home to major corporations such as Frito Lay, Butterball, FedEx, and Nestle and are looking to future development with four technology parks. The city is perfectly positioned for access to rail and highways, making it a logistical haven. Known as a regional healthcare hub, Jonesboro hosts two major hospitals, many specialty clinics, and mental/behavioral health services that serve a 23-county area of Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. It is home to an agricultural processing industry that processes rice, cotton, and soybeans. Jonesboro’s location makes it a natural draw for the 12 surrounding counties. The location makes it a retail mecca and restaurant destination for half a million residents in the surrounding communities. A great deal of commercial real estate investment and development has positively impacted Jonesboro with job, economic, and population growth, and this growth paints a positive picture for the community’s future.
Jonesboro has a rich history. It was established in 1859 and named after William A. Jones - a state senator. Jonesboro did not suffer damage from the war. In 1909, the state founded the First District Agriculture School, (later named First District Agricultural and Mechanical School (A&M) in 1925), which was one of four public Agricultural Schools in the State. In 1910, local farmers decided to grow rice in the area’s fertile farmland. Their efforts were quite successful. The largest rice mill in the world was built there in 1930 and was operated by Riceland Foods Inc. Today, the rice industry is still one of the area’s major businesses. In 1932, Hattie Caraway, a Jonesboro resident, became the first elected woman U.S. Senator. The Arkansas State College was created in 1933 when it took over A&M. After WWII, Jonesboro became a manufacturing center due to its central locale and railroad road accessibility, and this remains true today. In 1967, the state college officially became Arkansas State University. The revitalized historic and quaint downtown reflects its historical roots, and its revitalization demonstrates pride, growth of the community, and an eye toward the future.
It is categorized as a “Main Street Arkansas Community,” which recognizes its’ historical past and the revitalization efforts put forth by the community. This status is highly valued and sought-after. This district offers art galleries, restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, and the Forum Civic Center and Theatre. The Downtown Jonesboro Alliance plays a big role in coordinating local events and encouraging community and local business growth. The residents of Jonesboro and the surrounding communities go all out for the local high school football teams. The games are loved by the communities and are a point of pride. You will find rivalries, traditions, and lots of team spirit at these games which increases the connected nature of the communities.
Arkansas State University has played a big part in the history of Jonesboro. It was established in 1909, provides bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, and has a combined student population of 14,903. The museum, Fine Art Center, and the indoor sports/ entertainment complex provide a wealth of cultural and sports activities. The University also catalyzes business and tech growth in the region and the state. There are 10 other colleges in the area: Four private colleges, and six community colleges.
Local parks offer great recreational and educational opportunities. Crowley’s Ridge State Park offers a scenic byway that follows the ridge and recreational activities, including camping, hiking, fishing, and swimming. Craighead Forest Park is a great place to explore natural history and wildlife. The park offers exhibits, trails, and educational programs as well. Lake Frierson State Park is a fisherman’s paradise for bream, crappie, catfish, saugeye, and bass. Boat rentals, camping, picnic areas, and playgrounds are located in the park.

Lake City, Arkansas
Lake City has a rich history as a trading post, steamboat landing, and sawmill town. In its earlier years, it was categorized as a small city but is now rated as a small town. It is located in Craighead County on the west bank of the Saint Francis River. The original post office was named “Sunk Lands” due to the 1812 earthquake, which greatly changed the geography of the area, creating a lake. The name changed to Lake City in 1881. The town constructed a wooden bridge in 1898 that was over a mile long over the St. Francis River. Several bridges have replaced the original ones, all being engineering feats. The old “lift bridge” was preserved and relocated south of its original location and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dyess is part of the flat, fertile lands of the Delta and is still a major agricultural industry.

Hoxie became the junction of the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroads because residents of Walnut Ridge could not agree on where it should be located. Lepanto, Arkansas
Lepanto is a charming small town and is located in the sunken lands area of Northeast Arkansas. The Painted House, one of its landmarks, is known for being featured in a movie based on a John Grisham novel. The town is also on the Great River Road National Scenic Byway. The Timber and cotton industries played a big part in the town’s early economic growth. The town started the Lepanto Terrapin Derby, a fundraiser for the town’s American Legion in the 1930s. This turtle race has been running for eight decades, has become a big community festival, and is still going strong.

Trumann, Arkansas
Trumann dates back to the mid-1800s and was home to the timber industry. Singer’s sewing company was influential in the growth of the town, as the cabinets for their sewing machines were made here and employed and housed many workers. This lumber industry because of the clearing of the hardwoods - created the region’s agricultural industry of cotton, soybeans, rice, wheat, and corn crops. Today, Truman is a vibrant small-town community rich in culture, history, local attractions, and a balance of young professionals, families, and retirees.
Walnut Ridge, Arkansas
Walnut Ridge has a rich, 150-year historical past and is a wonderful place to raise a family. The city offers many outdoor recreational opportunities and is a logistic hub for many businesses. It operated as a flying school for the US Air Force during WW II. It has a guitar-shaped plaza downtown to honor musicians who played and stopped in the town while traveling the “Rock ‘n’ Roll Highway 67, including Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, and the Beatles. In honor of the Beatles, they renamed a downtown street, Abbey Road, erected a sculpture of the Beatles in a local park, and created a music festival called Beatles at the Ridge. It is also home to Southern Baptist College.

Marked Tree, Arkansas
Marked Tree is one of the few towns in the world with an original name, not replicated anywhere. It sits between two rivers, the St Francis and the Little River. The Lock and Siphons, which are on the National Register of Historic Places, were built in the 1920s to control flooding and create transportation on the St. Francis River. The geography of the area, known as the “Sunken Lands,” was created by earthquakes on the New Madrid Fault. The Arkansas State University Technical Center offers varied programs of study and calls Marked Tree home.
Newport, Arkansas
Newport’s slogan is “proud past-bright future.” Located in Jackson County on the White River and is the county seat. Newport’s history includes Native American tribes, including the Choctaw and Quapaw, the center of the freshwater pearl market from 1900-1920 and was the home to Newport Air Base until 1946. Sam Walton (Walmart) opened his first store, a Ben Franklin five-and-dime store here. Arkansas State University has a branch campus which is a robust economy, and a family-friendly feel making it a great place to live and work.
Pocahontas, Arkansas
Pocahontas was named after the native American Pocahontas. It is located upon the beautiful black river and is the county seat of Randolph County. Today, it is known as a regional hub for light industry and farm supplies. It has a beautiful historic district with a historic river walk, art galleries, restaurants, and shops, and is home to the first Arkansas Quilt Trail.
Monette, Arkansas
Monette is in the Buffalo Island region of Northeast Arkansas. Legend has it that flooding, caused by the earthquakes along the New Madrid Fault, stranded a herd of buffalo on an island in 1899…and thus, the region’s name was born. The team had a semiprofessional baseball team called the Monette Buffaloes, and they hosted the first semi-pro tournament in the US in 1930. Today, its suburban, rural feel and highly rated schools make it a sweet place for families to live and raise a family. Monette is part of Craighead County.
